中国の南部からマレー半島、それにスマトラ島やミクロネシアのカロリン諸島に分布しています。高さは１．５〜３メートルになります。「さんたんか（山丹花）」の仲間では最も大きな花を咲かせます。葉は楕円形から披針形で、先端がやや尖り対生します。５月から１０月ごろ、枝先の散形花序に濃赤色から淡橙色の花を咲かせます。写真は園芸品種の「スーパーキング（cv. Super King）」。中国名では「大王仙丹花」。

アカネ科サンタンカ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Ixora duffii（syn. Ixora casei）。英名は Giant red ixora、Malay ixora。

The Giant red ixora (Ixora duffii) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from southern China to the Malay Peninsula, as well as Sumatra and the Caroline Islands in Micronesia. It grows to 1.5 to 3 m in height. It produces the largest flowers in the "Ixora" family. It produces dark red to light orange flowers in umbels at the ends of branches from May to October. The photos show the garden variety 'Super King'. The Chinese name is "大王仙丹花".
