わが国の本州、茨城県以西から四国、九州それに台湾からインドシナ半島に分布しています。湿った林内に生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルになります。葉は長楕円形で先端が鋭く尖り互生します。４月から５月ごろ、葉腋に花序をだし黄白色の花を咲かせます。果実は晩秋から冬に乳白色に熟します。台湾華語では「山桂花」。

ヤブコウジ科イズセンリョウ属の常緑低木で、学名は Maesa japonica。英名はありません。

"Izu-senryo" (Maesa japonica) belongs to Myrsinaceae (the Myrsine family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed westward from Ibaraki prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, Taiwan and the Indo-China Peninsula. This tree grows in wet forests and can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are oblong and alternate with acute tips. The clusters are borne on the axiles and bloom yellowish-white flowers from April to May. The fruits are round and ripen in milky white from late fall to winter. In Tawanese Chinese, it is "山桂花".
