南アメリカの北部に分布しています。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは６〜１０メートルになります。単幹種のヤシで、幹や葉柄、花序などは長い黒色の棘に被われています。葉は羽状複葉で、小葉の先端が魚の尾びれのようなかたちをしています。茎頂から総状花序を下垂させ、球形の赤い果実をいっぱいつけます。

ヤシ科アイファネス属の常緑小高木で、学名は Aiphanes aculeata（syn. Aiphanes caryotifolia）。英名は Coyure palm、Ruffle palm。

Coyure palm (Aiphanes aculeata) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to northern South America. This tree grows in rainforests and can reach 6-10 m in height. This palm is a single trunk, the stem, petioles and inflorescence stem are covered with long black spines. The leaves are pinnate compound and the tips of leaflets look like tail fins. The racemes are drooping from the shoot apexes and bear many round red fruits.
