The "Ogasawara-azami" (Cirsium boninense) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan's Ogasawara Islands. It grows in coastal grasslands, sandy beaches, and rocky areas, reaching a height of 1 to 1.5 m. The leaves are fleshy and glossy, ranging from narrowly ovate to ovate in shape, with serrated or shallowly pinnately lobed margins and sharp spines. From around May to June, it extends flower stalks and produces white flower heads. The involucre is cup-shaped to bell-shaped and not sticky.
