わが国、小笠原諸島の固有種です。海岸近くの林に生え、高さは１０〜１５メートルになります。葉は長い葉柄の先につき、直径１メートルほどで掌状に中・深裂します。４月から５月ごろ、葉柄の基部から円錐花序をだし、小さな黄白色の花を咲かせます。果実は楕円形の核果で青黒く熟します。

ヤシ科ビロウ属の常緑高木で、学名は Livistona chinensis var. boninensis。英名はありません。

The "Ogasawara-biro" (Livistona chinensis var. boninensis) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is endemic to the Ogasawara Islands in Japan. It grows in forests near the coast and grows 10 to 15 m tall. It produces small yellowish-white flowers in April or May in panicles at the base of the petiole. The fruit is an elliptic kernel that ripens blue-black.
