わが国の小笠原諸島に分布しています。海岸の砂地に生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。本州の関東地方以西から九州に分布する「はまおもと（はまゆう）」に似ていますが、かなり大型です。７月から８月ごろ、花茎の先に白色の細長い花被片のある花を咲かせます。種子は海流で散布されます。（新潟県立植物園では、熱帯アフリカ原産とされています。）

ユリ科ハマオモト属の常緑多年草で、学名は Crinum gigas。英名は Ogasawara poison lily。

Ogasawara poison lily (Crinum gigas) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to the Ogasawara archipelago. This herb grows on the coastal sand, and up to a height of 1-2 m. It resembles the "Hama-omoto" (Crinum asiaticum var. japonicum) distributed from Kanto district of Honshu west to Kyushu, but it is quite large. The flowers with white elongated tepals will bloom atop of the flowering stalk from July to August. Seeds are distributed in ocean currents. (At Niigata Prefectural Botanical Garden, it is considered to be native to tropical Africa.)
