わが国の本州、紀伊半島以北から北海道それに朝鮮半島や中国東北部、シベリアに分布しています。亜高山帯に生え、高さは３〜１０メートルになります。葉は掌状に５〜７裂し、対生します。６月から８月ごろ、枝先に長さ１０〜２０センチの円柱花序をだし、黄緑色の花を咲かせます。和名は、材が皮を剥いだ後の麻幹（おがら）のように柔らかいことから。中国名では「花楷楓（hua kai feng）」。

The Ukurundu maple (Acer ukurunduense) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native from northward from the Kii Peninsula of Honsu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China and Siberia. This tree grws in sub-alpine zone and it can reach 3-10 m in height. The leaves are palmately divided into 5-7 leaflets and arranged in opposite. The columnar clusters are borne at the terminal branches and bloom yellowish-green flowers from June to August. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the wood is soft like a "ogara" (hemp reed) after being peeled. Its Chinese name is "花楷楓" (hua kai feng).
