The "Ogasawara-shiko-ran" (Bulbophyllum boninense) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is distributed in the Ogasawara Islands. It grows on trees and rocks in mountainous areas, epiphytic, and grows 15 to 20 cm tall. The rhizome grows long, and pseudobulbs are attached at the nodes. The leaves are oblong, and one is attached to each pseudobulb. The flower scapes droop from June to July, and 3 to 5 flowers are produced at the tips. The flowers are pale yellow with dark reddish purple spots in the center. It is classified as an endangered species (VU) on the Red List of the Ministry of the Environment.
