The "Okinawa-haguma" (Ainsliaea macroclinidioides var. okinawensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed in the Nansei Islands, south of Japan's Tokara Islands. It grows along mountain streams and on roadsides, reaching a height of 30 to 80 cm. The leaves are broadly ovate to ovate, somewhat thick, with pointed tips; they are glabrous and glossy. The leaves are clustered at the base and arranged in a whorled pattern. It produces flower stalks almost year-round, bearing numerous flower heads at their tips. Each capitulum consists of three small white flowers, about 8 mm in diameter, and is arranged in a raceme at the tips of the branches. The corolla of each small flower is deeply five-lobed, with the lobes arranged toward the outer edge of the capitulum. The fruit is an achene 7 mm long, bearing a feathery pappus. It is also known by the alternative name "Okinawa-teisho-so".
