The "Okinawa-ibota" (Ligustrum liukiuense) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is a species native to Japan, found in the Nansei Islands. It grows in mountainous areas and along forest edges, reaching a height of about 1 to 7 m. The branches are grayish-white, and new shoots are covered with fine hairs. The leaves are elliptical to ovate-elliptical, thin and leathery, with entire margins, and arranged in opposite pairs. From around May to June, it produces panicles at the tips of its branches, bearing dense clusters of fragrant white flowers. The fruit is an ovoid drupe that ripens to a dark purple color.
