The "Okinawa-sokei" (Jasminum superfluum) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is an evergreen shrub that is endemic to Japan's Nansei Islands. It is distributed from Kikaijima in the Amami Islands to the Okinawa Islands, the Miyako Islands, and Iriomote Island in the Yaeyama Islands. It grows on uplifted limestone rocks near the coast, along roadsides, and at forest edges, reaching a length of 3 to 5 m. The leaves are trifoliate and arranged in opposite pairs. The terminal leaflet is ovate-lanceolate, while the lateral leaflets range from narrowly ovate to ovate. From August to September, it produces panicles at the branch tips, bearing fragrant white flowers. The fruit is a spherical berry that ripens to black. It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
