The "Okinawa-sumire" (Viola utchinensis) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species found on Okinawa Island in Japan's Okinawa Islands. It grows on the slopes of coastal cliffs (on uplifted coral reefs) and reaches a height of 5 to 10 cm. The rhizome branches out, grows, and becomes thickened. The leaves are heart-shaped and fleshy. They have slender petioles about 4 cm long. From February to March, five-petaled flowers ranging from white to pale purple bloom sideways on flower stalks about 6 cm long. The fruit is a small spherical capsule, and the seeds inside are dispersed by ants. It is designated as Endangered (EN) in Category IB of the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
