The "Okinawa-tsuge" (Buxus liukiuensis) belongs to Buxaceae (the Boxwood family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Japan's Nansei Islands to Taiwan. It grows in forests within limestone regions and reaches a height of 5 to 7 m. The bark is grayish-white, and the twigs are square-shaped with a slight fuzz. The leaves are ovate-oblong, leathery, with entire margins, and arranged in opposite pairs. From September to October, it produces racemose inflorescences in the leaf axils, bearing inconspicuous flowers. The plant is dioecious. It has no petals; male flowers have four sepals, while female flowers have six. The fruit is an obovate to spherical capsule that ripens to a brownish-black to dark purple color. It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red List. It is called "琉球黃楊" in Tawanese Chinese.
