わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに北半球の温帯地域に広く分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の草地や岩場に生え、高さは５０〜９０センチになります。根茎は太く、葉を叢生します。葉身は狭長楕円形から卵状長楕円形で、３回羽状に分裂します。胞子嚢群は円形から楕円形です。

イワデンダ科メシダ属の夏緑性シダ類で、学名は Athyrium distentifolium。英名は Alpine lady-fern。

The Alpine lady-fern (Athyrium distentifolium) belongs to the family Woodsiaceae. It is a summer-green fern that is distributed widely in the Northern Hemisphere. It can be found northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan. This fern grows in sub-alpine to alpine grasslands or scrags and can reach 50-90 cm in height. The rhizomes are thick and the leaves are clumping. The leaf-blades are tripinnately compound and narrow-oblong to ovate-oblong. The spore spikes are round to elliptic.
