The Arrowhead (Sagittaria trifolia) belongs to Alismataceae (the Water-plantain family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China, Siberia and Southeast Asia. This herb grows in rice fields and shallow ponds, and can reach about 60 cm in height. The leaves are arrowhead-shaped with acute tips. The lower lobes are longer than the upper lobe. It is monoecious. The flowering stalks are borne and bloom white flowers from July to October. The male flowers are arranged on the cluster apices and the female flowers are arraged on lower of the cluster. Its Japanese name comes from the shape of its leaves, which look like a human face. In Chinese, it is called "野慈姑" (ye ci gu).
