The Prickly water lily (Euryale ferox) belongs to Nymphaeaceae (the Water lily family). It is an annual herb that is distributed southward from Miyagi Prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, China and Southeast Asia. This herb grows in the ponds and bogs, the leaves float on the water and can reach up to 2 m in diameter. The leaves, calyces and fruits are covered with spines. Purple flowers bloom on the flowering stalks from August to October. It has chasmogamous flowers and cleistogamous flowers. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "芡" and "芡實" (qian shi) in Chinese.
