"Oni-bishi" (Trapa natans var. rubeola f. viridis) belongs to Trapaceae (the Water caltrop family). It is an annual herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan. This herb grows in ponds and bogs. The roots spread in mud. The leaves are lozenged with bladders and float on the water surface. The small white flowers come in July through October. Following bloom, it bears the fruits with 4 thorns in water.
