The "Oni-kana-warabi" (Arachniodes chinensis) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Fukushima Prefecture in Honshu westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China and Southeast Asia. It grows in the forests of mountainous areas and is 50 to 100 cm tall. The leaves are dark green, glossy and leathery, with a bipinnate compound structure. The petiole is 25 to 55 cm long. There are 4 to 6 or more pairs of pinnae, and the terminal pinna is indistinct. The lower pinna has a long, downward-pointing bract. The sorus is located halfway between the margin of the lobes and the midrib, and the indusium is reniform. In Taiwanese, it is called "中華複葉耳蕨", and in Chinese, it is called "中華複葉耳蕨" (zhong hua fu ye er jue).
