わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。湿地や川岸にふつうに生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。６月から７月ごろ、花を咲かせます。上部には線形の雄花序、下部には柱状の雌花序がつきます。和名は雌花序が鳴子に似ていることから。

カヤツリグサ科スゲ属の多年草で、学名は Carex vesicaria。英名は Bladder-sedge。

The Bladder-sedge (Carex vesicaria) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is widely distributed throughout Japan and the Northern Hemisphere. It commonly grows in wetlands and along riversides, and its flowers are 30-90 cm tall. The flowers bloom from June to July, with linear male inflorescences on the top and columnar female inflorescences on the bottom. The Japanese name is derived from the female inflorescences, which resemble "naruko" (bird clapper).
