わが国の北海道西南部から沖縄、それに朝鮮半島や中国中東部に分布しています。海岸の砂地に生え、高さは１０〜２０センチになります。根茎は細くてかたく、地中を這って広がり、節から茎とひげ根をだします。葉は線状披針形で互生します。６月から８月ごろ、茎頂に円柱状の花序をだし、花を咲かせます。中国語では「大穂結楼草（da sui jie lu cao）」と呼ばれます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科シバ属の多年草で、学名は Zoysia macrostachya。英名はありません。

"Oni-shiba" (Zoysia macrostachya) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed southward from southern Hokkaido to Okinawa of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and central-eastern China. This herb grows in sandy soils on the beaches and can reach 10-20 cm in height. The rhizomes are slender, stiff, creeping and spreading under grounds. The stems and fibrils are borne at the nodes. The leaves are linear-lanceolate and alternate. The columnar inflorescence is borne on the stem apices and blooms flowers from June to August. In Chinese, it is called "大穂結楼草" (da sui jie lu cao). It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
