The "Oni-shimotsuke" (Filipendula kamtschatica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands, Sakhlin and the Kamchatska Peninsula. This herb grows on montane to alpine sunny grasslands and along mountain streams, and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are divided into 5 lobes palmately with duplicato-serratus edges. The cymes are borne on the stem apices and the small white flowers bloom from June to September. The flower-color is occasionally pale rose-pink at the Japan Sea side of Honshu. The Japanese name is because it is a big "Shimotsuke-so".
