The Holly fern (Cyrtomium falcatum) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed southward from southern Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as East Asia and India. This fern grows on coastal cliffs or inland hillsides and can reach 40-60 cm in height. The stems are weeping on the cliffs. The leaves are thick and dark green with 7-18 pairs of pinnae. The pinnae have wavy edges and round sori evenly on the abaxial sides. The center of indusium is black. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "‘S‰ŠÑO˜n".
