西ヨーロッパが原産です。わが国へは第二次大戦後に砂防用や牧草として導入されましたが、今では各地に野生化しています。日当たりの良い道端や堤防などに生え、高さは１メートルほどになります。５月から７月ごろ、円錐花序をだして、多数の小穂をつけます。別名で「トールフェスク」とも呼ばれます。

イネ科ウシノケグサ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Festuca arundinacea。英名は Tall fescue。

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to western Europe. It was introduced into Japan as an erosion control or a meadow grass after the Second World War, and nowadays it is naturalized in so many places. This herb occurs in sunny roadsides or banks and can reach about 1 m in height. The panicles are borne and produce many spikelets from May to July.
