The Japanese fantail willow (Salix sachalinensis) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to Hokaido, Honshu and Shikoku of Japan, as well as Sakhalin, north-eastern China and the reach of Amur River. This tree grows in hillside to sub-alpine, sunney valleys and stream banks, and can reach 8-15 m in height. The leaves are linear, serrate with acute tips. The new-leaf edges twist inside. It is dioecious and the flowers bloom before foliation from April to May. The fruits are capusles and split open and scatter many willow catkins which covered with white wooly hairs from May to June.
