ヨーロッパから中央アジアに分布しています。乾燥した牧草地や草地などに生え、高さは３０〜７０センチになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、狭い長楕円形の小葉がつきます。６月から８月ごろ、茎頂に総状花序をだし、小さな赤紫色の蝶形花を咲かせます。飼料作物やミツバチの蜜源として栽培されています。

マメ科オノブリキス属の多年草で、学名は Onobrychis viciifolia。英名は Sainfoin。

Sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) belongs to the Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe and West Asia. This herb grows in arid meadows or grassland and can reach 30-70 cm in height. The leaves are pinnate compound with narrow oblong leaflets. The racemes are borne on the stem apices and bloom small magenta flowers from June to August. This herb is cultivated as forage crop and source of honey.
