西インド諸島から中央アメリカが原産です。高さは２０〜３０メートルになり、樹皮は灰色がかった黄褐色です。葉は倒卵状披針形で、枝先にまとまってつきます。花は白色の５弁花で、葉腋に２〜３個咲きます。果実は楕円形から卵形で、長さが１０〜１８センチあります。果肉は赤褐色からサーモンピンクをしていて、甘味が強いのが特徴です。生食用のほか、マーマレードやチョコレートの原料に利用されます。

The True sapote (Calocarpum sapota) belongs to Sapotaceae (the Sapote family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the West Indies and Central America. This tree can reach 20-30 m in height with grayish yellow-brown barks. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate and crowed at the terminal branches. The flowers are white 5-petaled and borne on the axiles. The fruits are elliptic to ovate and 10-18 cm long. The flesh is reddish brown to salmon-pink and strong sweet. The fruits are used for raw diet and the raw material for marmalade or chocolate.
