わが国の固有種で、本州から四国・九州に分布しています。水田や水路などに生育する浮遊性の水生シダです。長さは１．５〜７センチになり、葉の表面には突起がほとんどありません。根に根毛がないのが特徴です。秋には全体が赤くなり、冬は先端部を残して枯れます。外来種の「アゾラ・クリスタータ（Azolla cristata）」に極めて似ていて、判別は困難です。

アカウキクサ科アカウキクサ属の浮遊性シダ植物で、学名は Azolla japonica。英名は Japanse mosquitofern。

Japanse mosquitofern (Azolla japonica) belongs to Azollaceae (the Azolla family). It is a small free-floating fern that is endemic to Japan and distributed to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This fern grows in rice fields or channels. It is 1.5-7 cm long and has not protruding portions on the surface. It is defined by without root hairs. The leaves turn red in fall and blight in winter except for apical portions. It is mirrored by Water fern (Azolla cristata) and difficult to determine.
