わが国の本州から四国、九州に分布しています。山地の渓流沿いに生え、高さは８〜１２メートルになります。樹皮は淡黒色で、広楕円形または広倒卵形の葉は互生します。６月、枝先に複総状花序を下垂して白い花を咲かせます。花冠は深く５裂しています。果実は９月から１０月に熟します。材は箸の材料にされます。

エゴノキ科アサガラ属の落葉高木で、学名は Pterostyrax hispida。英名は Epaulette tree。

The Epaulette tree (Pterostyrax hispida) belongs to the family Styracaceae. It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows along mountain streams and is 8 to 12 m tall. In June, white flowers bloom in drooping compound raceme at the ends of branches. The corolla has five deep lobes. The fruits ripen from September to October. The wood is used to make chopsticks.
