Plantago asiatica

"Oba-Ko" (Plantago asiatica) belongs to Plantaginaceae (the Plantain family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows on roadsides and waste places. It is also called "Che Qian Zi", because of it often grows on heavily traveled streets. The leaves are basal. The spikes are borne atop of flowering stems and bloom out small flowers from bottom up of clusters in April to September. This herb has need of moderate stamps, otherwise it is almost impossible to survive for under cover of neighbor plants. Therefor its leaves and flowering stalks have vigorous vascular bundles which adapt to stamps. The leaves and fruits are known as a cough medicine in Japanese kampo.
