わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。山地から亜高山帯のやや湿った林に生え、高さは５０〜１２０センチになります。葉は１回３出複葉で、円心形の小葉がつきます。小葉は大きく、掌状に５〜９裂します。８月から１０月ごろ、茎の上部に穂状花序をだし、白色の花を咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは萼片で、開花すると落ちて、ブラシ状の雄しべが目立ちます。果実は楕円形の袋果です。中国語では「小升麻（xiao sheng ma）」と呼ばれます。

キンポウゲ科サラシナショウマ属の多年草で、学名は Cimicifuga acerina (syn. Cimicifuga japonica)。英名はありません。

The "Ooba-shoma" (Cimicifuga acerina) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native to throughout Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in montane to subalpine forests, and it can reach 50-120 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliate compound with round-cordate leaflets. They are large and divided into 5-9 lobes palmately. The spikes are borne atop of stems and bloom white flowers from August to October. The sepals are petaloid and shed early and the visible, brush-like stamens remain for a long time. The fruits are elliptic follicles. In Chinese, it is called "小升麻" (xiao sheng ma).
