Sha ma gan (Alchornea davidi) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is a deciduous shrub that is southeastern China. This shrub grows in valleys, slopes of streams or rivers, deciduous forests, and it can reach 1-5 m in height. It is monoecious. The leaves are broadly ovate or subrounded, papery with dentate or serrulate margins. Male and female flowers bloom in April and May. Male catkinlike inflorescences bear at leafless node, and female inflorescences bear at terminal of branchlets. The male flower has 3-4 sepals and 6-8 stamens. The female flower has 5 sepals and 3 styles.
