The "Oo-beni-shida" (Dryopteris hondonensis) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from the central parts of the Tohoku region of Honshu south to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, and the Chinese provinces of Zhejiang and Sichuan. It grows in the forests of mountainous areas and is 20 to 50 cm tall. It is similar to "Autumn fern" (Dryopteris erythrosora), but slightly smaller. The leaves are bipinnate compound, yellowish-green in color, and have a papery texture with little gloss. The leaf stalk base has slightly glossy brown to brownish-red scales. The sorus is attached to the midrib of the pinnule, and the indusium is large and round, white and without a red tinge. It is also known by the name "Hiroha-beni-shida" (broad-leaved red fern). In Chinese, it is called "“‰Ô“‡—ؖјn" (tao hua dao lin mao jue).
