The large-leafed Japanese linden (Tilia maximowicziana) belongs to Tiliaceae (the Linden family). It is a tall deciduos tree that is distributed from Chubu district of Honshu north to Hokkaido. This tree grows in mountainous deciduous forests and its height is 6 to 8 m. The bark is dark gray and has a shallow split vertically. The leaves are large round, 10 to 14 cm in length, heart-shaped at the base, with fine serrations. The back side is covered densely with stellate hairs and has an off-white color. The pale yellow flowers come in drooping the cymes from June to July. The bracts are narrow ovate to spatulate and are 5 to 8 cm in length. The fruits are spherical to ovate and remain long.
