わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道に分布しています。山地の落葉樹林に生え、高さは６～８メートルになります。樹皮は暗灰色で、縦に浅く割れ目が入ります。葉は大きな円形で、長さが１０～１４センチあり、基部は心形、細かい鋸歯があります。裏面は密に星状毛が生え、灰白色をしています。６月から７月ごろ、下垂した集散花序に、淡い黄色の花を咲かせます。苞葉は狭長円形からへら形で、長さは５～８センチあります。果実は球形から楕円形で、長く残ります。

シナノキ科シナノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Tilia maximowicziana。英名は Large-leafed Japanese linden。

The large-leafed Japanese linden (Tilia maximowicziana) belongs to Tiliaceae (the Linden family). It is a tall deciduos tree that is distributed from Chubu district of Honshu north to Hokkaido. This tree grows in mountainous deciduous forests and its height is 6 to 8 m. The bark is dark gray and has a shallow split vertically. The leaves are large round, 10 to 14 cm in length, heart-shaped at the base, with fine serrations. The back side is covered densely with stellate hairs and has an off-white color. The pale yellow flowers come in drooping the cymes from June to July. The bracts are narrow ovate to spatulate and are 5 to 8 cm in length. The fruits are spherical to ovate and remain long.
