北アメリカが原産です。わが国では１９５２年に静岡県で帰化が確認されています。湿地や草原、道ばたなどに生え、高さは６０〜４５０センチになります。長い柄のある大きな葉は対生し、ふつう３〜５裂します。６月から１０月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から長い穂状花序をだし、小さな黄色い花を咲かせます。大量の花粉を飛ばすため、花粉症のアレルゲンともなっています。葉のかたちから、別名で「くわもどき（桑擬き）」とも呼ばれます。

キク科ブタクサ属の一年草で、学名は Ambrosia trifida。英名は Great ragweed、Giant ragweed。

The Great ragweed (Ambrosia trifida) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to North America. It was confirmed to naturalize in Shizuoka prefecture in 1952. This herb grows in marshes, grasslands and roadsides, and can reach 60-450 cm in height. The leaves are large, opposite and three to five-lobate with long petioles. The long spikes bear on the stem apices and leaf axils, and bloom small yellow flowers from June to October. The pollen of this flowers are an allergen of hay fever.
