南アメリカが原産です。いまでは世界各地に広く帰化しています。わが国では大正時代に実験用として導入したものが逃げ出して、本州から四国・九州に広がっています。河川や湖沼などの水中に生え、茎の長さは１メートルほどになります。葉は線形で、３〜６個が輪生します。５月から１０月ごろ、水面に白色の花を咲かせます。花弁は３個あり、一日花です。雌雄異株ですが、わが国には雄株しかありません。

トチカガミ科オオカナダモ属の多年草で、学名は Egeria densa。英名は Brazilian waterweed。

Brazilian waterweed (Egeria densa) belongs to Hydrocharitaceae (the Frogbit family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South America. It is widely naturalized throughout the world. It was introduced into Japan for a laboratory use in Taisho Period (about 100 years ago), and it escaped from cultivation and nowaday it spreads in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan. This herb grows in waters of rivers or lakes, and the stem can reach about 1 m long. The leaves are linear and arranged 3-6 whorled. The white flowers bloom on the water surface from May to October. The flower has three petals and last one day. It is dioecious, though the only female plant exists in Japan.
