わが国の奄美大島と徳之島に分布しています。高さは１．５メートルほどになります。葉は卵形から卵状長楕円形で、らせん状につきます。７月から８月ごろ、円錐花序に黄色い花を咲かせます。花冠に花弁はなく、先端が４裂した黄色い筒状の萼があります。昔は、樹皮を紙の原料に利用していました。

ジンチョウゲ科ガンピ属の落葉低木で、学名は Diplomorpha phymatoglossa。英名はありません。

"Ooshima-gampi" (Diplomorpha phymatoglossa) belongs to Thymelaeaceae (the Akia family). It is a small decidous tree that is native to the Amami Island and the Tokunoshima Island. This tree can reach about 1.5 m in height. The leaves are ovate to ovate-oblong and arranged in spiraling. The yellow flowers bloom in the panicles from July to August. The corolla is non-petaled and has yellow, tubular, four-lobate sepal. The barks were used as a material of paper in former days.
