ヨーロッパの中・南部からアジア、ヒマラヤ辺りまで分布しています。高さは９０〜１５０センチになります。葉は楕円形で、柔らかな毛に被われます。夏から秋、黄色い頭花を咲かせます。根茎は太く、苦味があり、樟脳のような香りがあります。ヨーロッパでは民間薬として、発汗、利尿、去痰に用いられます。

キク科オグルマ属の多年草で、学名は Inula helenium。英名は Elecampane、Horse-heal。

The Elecampane (Inula helenium) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed eastward from central and southern Europe to Asia; as far as the Himalayas. This herb can reach 90-150 cm in height. The leaves are elliptic and covered with soft hairs. The flower-heads are yellow and bloom in summer and fall. The rhizomatous roots are thick and have a bitter taste and a camphoraceous odor. They are used as a herbal medicine for sudorific, diuretic agent or expectorant drug in Europe.
