The Cretan brake fern (Pteris cretica) belongs to the family Pteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is widely distributed from Miyagi Prefecture of Honshu southward to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as wella as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, and in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It grows in sunny places in mountains and lowlands, and grows 20 to 60 cm tall. The leaves are single pinnate compound with a terminal pinna and dimorphic. The fertile frond is characterized by a longer petiole and narrower leaf width than the sterile frond. The rachis is smooth and wingless. The sorus is long along the margins of the pinna. It is called "大葉鳳尾蕨" in Taiwanese Huayu and "欧洲鳳尾蕨" (ou zhou feng wei jue) in Chinese.
