The Curlytop knotweed (Persicaria lapathifolia) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is an annual herb that is native throughout Japan, as well as widely in the Northern Hemisphere. This herb can be found routinely in hills and dales, and can reach about 1 m in height. It is larger than "Inu-tade" (Persicaria longiseta). The leaves are lanceolate with acute tips, and arranged in alternate. The arched, drooping, flowering spikes are borne, and the pale rose pink to white flowers bloom from June to October. The corolla has 4-5 divided petaloid sepals. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "早苗蓼" and "馬蓼" (ma liao) in Chinese.
