ブラジルが原産です。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは２０センチほどになります。根生葉はへら形または倒卵形で、ビロードのような毛が密生しています。花は適温が維持されれば、年中咲きます。今では「おおいわぎりそう」をもとに，種間交配によって改良された園芸品種の一群を，「グロキシニア」と呼んでいます。写真の品種は、「カランゴラ（cv. Carangola）」。

イワタバコ科オオイワギリソウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Sinningia speciosa (syn. Gloxinia speciosa)。英名は Gloxinia。

The gloxinia (Sinningia speciosa) belongs to Gesneriaceae (the African violet family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to Brazil. This herb grows in tropical forests and up to a height of about 20cm. The basal leaves are spatula or obovate with dense velvety hairs. The flowers will bloom year-round if the temperature keeps comfortable. Now we call a group of garden varieties that have been improved by cross breeding as gloxinia, based on Sinningia speciosa.
