The Black mondo (Ophiopogon planiscapus) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial evergreen herb that is endemic to Japan, it is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. It grows on the forest floor in mountainous areas and is 15 to 30 cm tall. It grows in clusters, with sprawling branches. The leaves are linear and thick, 15 to 30 cm long. Around June to July, the flower scapes grow and white to light purple flowers bloom downward. The round, gray-greenish-black seeds look like fruits.
