The "Oo-kan-aoi" (Asarum hypogynum) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is a species endemic to Taiwan. It grows in the forest floor of mountains at an altitude of 1000 to 2000 m, and grows to a height of around 30 cm. The leaves are large, triangular-shaped, and have a green surface with white spots, and a light green underside with small glandular dots scattered across it. It flowers from December to March, with dark purple flowers. The calyx tube is cylindrical or bell-shaped, and the throat is slightly constricted. The sepal lobes are triangular and dark purple-brown in color. It is also known by the name "Imoba kan-aoi" (potato-leaf Asarum) in Japan. In Taiwanese, it is called "下花細辛".
