わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の高層湿原に生え、高さは６０〜１００センチになります。６月から８月ごろ、上部に雄性の花序、下部に雌性の穂状花序をつけ、花を咲かせます。むかしは菅笠の材料にされたそうです。

カヤツリグサ科スゲ属の多年草で、学名は Carex rhychophisa。英名はありません。

The "Oo-kasa-suge" (Carex rhychophisa) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido. This herb grows in sub-alpine to alpine high moors, and can reach 60-100 cm in height. The upper male clusters and the underneath female spikes are borne, and the flowers bloom from June to August. This leaves was used as a sedge hat's material at one time.
