わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それにサハリンや北アメリカに分布しています。山地の湿地や水辺に生え、高さは30〜60センチになります。株立ちして、葉や花茎は束になってでます。葉は線形で幅3〜8ミリ、鮮やかな緑色です。花茎は断面が三角で、鋭い稜があります。5月から7月ごろ、花茎の先に卵状円柱形の穂状花序をだします。小穂はやや接近してついて、雄雌性です。 
カヤツリグサ科スゲ属の多年草で、学名は Carex stipata。英名は Awl-fruited sedge。 
The Awl-fruited sedge (Carex stipata) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as Sakhalin and North America. This herb grows in mountainous wetlands and waterfronts and can reach 30-60 cm in height. It is clumping, and the leaves and flower stalks are bundled together. The leaves are linear, 3-8 mm wide and bright green. The flower stalk has a triangular cross section and has sharp ridges. The ovate-cylindrical spikes are borne on the tips of flower stalks from May to July. The spikelets are a little closer and are monoecious.
