The Fall panicgrass (Panicum dichotomiflorum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual herb that is native to North America. In Japan, it was first observed in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, in 1927, and has become naturalized in many areas. It grows in grasslands, wastelands, fields, and along roadsides, and is 40 to 100 cm tall. The culms are thick and erect, oblique or slanting. Large umbels are produced at the top of the stem from September to October. The lower part of the inflorescence is often enclosed in a leaf sheath, and the spikelets are pale purple. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
