南アメリカの熱帯地方が原産です。わが国へは大正時代の中頃に渡来しました。蔓の長さは３〜４メートルほどになり、茎には４稜があります。花は大きく赤紫色で、下向きに咲きます。花弁と萼片が５個ずつ交互に並び、ひげ状の副花冠は基部が赤紫色と白色の縞模様で、中央部は青色、先端は淡青色となります。果実は楕円形で、長さは２０〜３０センチほどになり、淡泊な味だそうです。

トケイソウ科トケイソウ属の蔓性常緑低木で、学名は Passiflora quadrangularis。英名は Giant granadilla。

The giant granadilla (Passiflora quadrangularis) belongs to Passifloraceae (the Passion flower family). It is an evergreen woody vine that is native to the tropical areas of South America. It was introduced into Japan in the middle days of Taisho Era (about 80 years old). The vines are quadrangular, 3-4 m long. The flowers are large magenta and bloom descending. The five sepals and petals are arranged in alternate. The filaceous coronas have magenta-white streaked bases and pale-blue tipped blue centers. The fruits are elliptic, 20-30 cm long, and have plain tastes.
