バルカン半島から小アジアに分布しています。葉は箆形で２〜３個が根生します。早春の２月から３月ごろ、１５〜２０センチほどの花茎を伸ばして、白い花を下向きに咲かせます。基部は緑色で、内花被片に緑色の模様が２段に入ります。別名で「おおゆきのはな（大雪の花）」とも呼ばれます。また、わが国でふつうに「スノードロップ」といえば本種のことを指します。

ユリ科ガランツス属の多年草で、学名は Galanthus elwesii。英名は Giant snowdrop、Snowdrop。

The giant snowdrop (Galanthus elwesii) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Balkan Peninsula to Asia Minor. The leaves are 2-3, spatulate and radicle. The flower stalks grow out 15-20 cm high and the drooping white flowers come in February to March. The tepals have greenish basis and double green spots on the inner tepals.
