バルカン半島から小アジアに分布しています。葉は箆形で２〜３個が根生します。早春の２月から３月ごろ、１５〜２０センチほどの花茎を伸ばして、白い花を下向きに咲かせます。基部は緑色で、内花被片に緑色の模様が２段に入ります。別名で「おおゆきのはな（大雪の花）」とも呼ばれます。また、わが国でふつうに「スノードロップ」といえば本種のことを指します。

ユリ科ガランツス属の多年草で、学名は Galanthus elwesii。英名は Giant snowdrop、Snowdrop。

The Giant snowdrop (Galanthus elwesii) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Balkan Peninsula to Asia Minor. The leaves are 2-3, spatulate and radicle. The flower stalks grow out 15-20 cm high and the drooping white flowers come in February to March. The tepals have greenish basis and double green spots on the inner tepals. In Japan, the term "snowdrop" generally refers to this species.
