わが国の本州、中部地方以北の日本海側から北海道、それにロシアの極東地域に分布しています。亜高山帯の湿地や沢沿いなどに生え、高さは２０～３０センチほどになります。葉は長卵形で鋭い鋸歯があり無柄で対生します。７月から８月ごろ、上部の葉腋から花茎を伸ばして黄色い花を咲かせます。花冠の内側には赤褐色の斑点があります。もっと低いところに生える「みぞほおずき（Mimulus nepalensis var. japonicus）」は、有柄で花冠に丸みがあります。

ゴマノハグサ科ミゾホオズキ属の多年草で、学名は Mimulus sessilifolius。英名はありません。

"Ooba-mizo-hoozuki" (Mimulus sessilifolius) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu district to the Japan Sea side of Honshu, Hokkaido and the Far East of Russia. This herb grows in sub-alpine bogs or alongs streams, and can reach 20-30 cm in height. The leaves are long-ovate, sessile with acute toothed edges, and arranged oppositely. The flowering stalks are borne at the upper axils, and the yellow flowers bloom from July to August. The corolla has reddish brown mottles on the inside surface.
