北アメリカが原産です。わが国にも帰化していて、本州から四国、九州に広く分布しています。荒れ地や道端などにふつうに見られます。紅色を帯びた茎は、直立するか斜めに伸びてよく分枝し、高さ２０〜６０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で、基部の左右が不揃いです。葉に、暗い赤紫色の斑紋がある個体があります。８月から１０月ごろ、枝先に杯状花序をつけ、目立たない花を咲かせます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

トウダイグサ科トウダイグサ属の一年草で、学名は Euphorbia maculata。英名は Spotted spurge、Prostrate spurge。

The Spotted spurge (Euphorbia maculata) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is an anuual herb that is native to North America. It is naturalized and distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It can be found in roadsides and barrens. The stems are tinged rose pink, extended erect or obliquely upward, and can reach 20-60 cm in height. The leaves are oblong and left-right asymmetric at the bases. They have sometimes dark magenta mottles on the upper surfaces. The inconspicuous flowers bloom in the cyathia from August to October. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
