スイカズラ科ニワトコ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Sambucus racemosa ssp. sieboldiana var. major。英名は Large-leafed Japanese elderberry。
The Large-leafed Japanese elderberry (Sambucus racemosa ssp. sieboldiana var. major) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a deciduous shrub that is native to the Japan Sea side of Honshu in Japan. This shrub is a variety of Japanese elderberry and grows in mountains of the heavy-snow regions. The trunks are creeping sideways and usually throw out roots. The leaves are imparipinnate with large and long leaflets. The panicles are borne at the terminal branches and bloom numerous pale yellowish white flowers from April to June. The fruits are ovate-round drupes and ripen dark red in July through August.
